Bacheng Yangcheng Lake Hairy Crabs

Yangcheng Lake Hairy Crabs, a type of freshwater crabs, establish settlements in Yangcheng Lake due to its broad and shallow waters with abundant sunlight and food, where they shell and grow quickly. It is said that “When the autumn wind blows, the legs of crabs itch.” In autumn, crabs ready to mate move eastward along rivers to the sea to spawn and in early spring of the following year, they set off for home.

The sound ecology of Yangcheng Lake is ideal for the hairy crabs to grow. Located in the east of Yangcheng Lake, Bacheng Town (including Zhengyi Town and Shipai Town), crowned as “Hometown of Chinese Yangcheng Lake Hairy Crabs”, has provided more than 3,700 households of farmers with jobs and has a registered annual output value of nearly RMB 4 billion through the development of hairy crab industry.

In 2010, with an aim to promote the brand and aquaculture techniques of Yangcheng Lake Crabs, Bacheng planned to construct Kunshan Yangcheng Lake Hairy Crab Industry Park in four phases, comprising a total investment of about RMB 1 billion. The park commenced operations in 2021.
